Elements of Hygiene Promotion

Dissemination of key hygiene messages related to:

 

  • The use of Safe Water for Drinking and Cooking,

  • Safe Defecation,

  • Proper Hand Washing Practice,

  • Environmental Sanitation and Hygiene Practice.

Strategy adopted for hygiene promotion

  • Interactive processes were followed to disseminate hygiene massages

  • Women and Students were the central audience of intensive hygiene promotion sessions.

  • Courtyard meeting, Household visit, School hygiene program and Tea stall sessions were conducted to promote water, sanitation and waste management related to hygiene practices among the primary target group.

  • Cultural activities, Issue based campaign, Watsanweek/month observation, Imam meeting, youth meeting etc. were performed to create water, sanitation and waste management related hygiene awareness in the society.

 

Strategy adopted for hygiene promotion

  • Posters, Leaflets, Billboards, Wall writings, Imam hand book etc. containing hygiene messages were prepared, distributed and fixed in the project area

  • A total of 17 water, sanitation and waste management behavior related sessions were designed, to disseminate through courtyard meetings to primary groups over a period of 6 months.

  • A total of 10 water, sanitation and waste management behavior related sessions were designed, to disseminate in school sessions over a period of one year.

Lessons learned

  • Combination of provision physical facility and hygiene education works better.

  • Involvement of men and women in hygiene promotion results good.

  • School hygiene program contributes to effective hygiene promotion at community level.

  • Use of print materials and other cultural events together plays effective supplementary role in hygiene promotion.

  • The involvement of BHE field staff in hygiene promotion activities did not work well due to lack of inter ministerial coordination.

Recommendations for the National Strategy of Hygiene Promotion Strategy of Hygiene Promotion

  • Develop National Strategy on Hygiene Promotion and translate it into action.

  • Develop monitoring strategy for hygiene promotion and define measurable indicators.

  • Involve Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as well as Ministry of Education in hygiene promotion program actively.

  • Combine and coordinate all efforts made by the development partners working for hygiene promotion

Recommendations for the National Strategy of Hygiene Promotion Strategy of Hygiene Promotion

  • Integrate physical facilities and hygiene promotion initiatives as much as possible.

  • Include hygiene promotion in School Education Curriculum.

  • Ensure gender equality in hygiene promotion

  • Ensure regular involvement of print and electronic media.

  • Organize training on hygiene promotion for formal and informal community leaders/catalyst.
