•Population Size:2,12,830 •Occupation:Rickshaw Pulling, Day Labor, Garments Work, Domestic Work, Small Business, Begging, Pottering , peddling, etc. •Hygiene Practices:From the analysis of the Baseline Survey Reports of different projects under the WatSan Program of the organization,it has been observed that 90% slum dwellers were using hanging latrine and open space defecation. Most of the slum-dwellers had no sanitary latrines. Those slum-dwellers had latrines, they did not have enough privacy i.e. those were particularly unfit for the of women and adolescent girls. Many women in the slums used to defecate in polythene bags, while the man and children did it in the drains and open space polluting the environment. As a resultof these, the women and the adolescent-girls were affected seriously for maintaining personal and menstrual hygiene. On the other hand, some people were using contaminated water from the near by well for drinking, washing and bathing purpose. For this reason, they were often affected with different water-borne diseases. The children were affected with diarrhea and even though some were died of it. It goes without saying that the slum dwellers had a very poor knowledge on hygiene and sanitation practices.
The 70.5% slum-dwellers have been using sanitary latrine in place of hanging latrines & open defecation.
•Due to lack of awareness on menstrual hygiene maintenance the women and adolescent-girls are affected with serious diseases. •It has been observed that the negative power structure opposes to implement development activities for the poor in the slums.
Special awareness strategy to be defined for proper maintenance of menstrual hygiene. Tactful Behavior with the existing negative power structure to be applied / maintained. In order to neutralize the negative force they (musclemen) should be included in the development process with the help of the local government representatives. Active participation of community people to be ensured to create catalysis or volunteerism among them.
