To test, fine tune and develop a replicable participatory approach in hygiene/sanitation promotion and to compare the effectiveness of this approach in terms of sustainable changes to hygiene behavior and sanitation facilities with the conventional methods Specific Objectives 1. Fine Tune participatory techniques that allow greater participation in the selection of behavior and design of messages for hygiene and sanitation promotion 2. Introduce devices that help facilitate selection of hygiene behaviors 3. Develop simple indicators of hygiene behavior and develop community base monitoring 4. Baseline and Present status of Hygiene practice under Project Area 1. Latrine coverage 2. Hand washing after defecation
3. Hand Washing before having meal with soap ![]() 4. Child excreta disposal in a safe way ![]() Lessons learnt 1.Participatory Techniques and Social Marketing technique is foundvery effective 2. Hygiene promotion and sanitation promotion should be stepped up simultaneously 3. Villagers are capable to analysis present practice and selectthe behaviors by themselves which behavior they wish to change. 4. Community has been participated to identify the un-served and underserved areas, behaviors they wish to change, select latrineoptions and M & E. 5. It’s found that 70% to 100%selected behaviors have been changed within two years interpenetration Period. 6. There are lots of methods and materials (interactive) for promoting hygiene behavior those is less expensive but effective. 7. A Capacity building training need to be organized for the changeagents members 8. One staff for each ward would be the ideal situation. 9. Monitoring of Mortality and morbidity of under five children has been found very effective

![]() Objective 1.To testify the effectiveness of already development improved participatory hygiene and sanitation promotion approach in union centred intervention 2.Testify mechanism that ensures distribution of responsibilities among LGI, NGOs to improve union based latrine converge and hygiene behaviour. Union wise Progress
1.One worker per ward would be the ideal to motivate households to build latrines and behavioral changes. 2.Partnership approach and budget allocation for .Union Parishad ensures effective role by UP to implement the WatSanProject 3. Community gives importance to the project whenUnion Parishad is involvedand ensure dramatic increase in latrine coverage 4. Capacity Building Training helps UP/Ward WatSanCommittee to take responsibility 5.Selection of the Field facilitators from the same intervened union would be the ideal. 6.Govt. policy/political Interest/pressure is essential to implement the WatSanProject. 7.ADP is budget is not enough for a Union & need more resource mobilization to address hardcore poor 8.Awareness program and subsidies is not enough for 100% sanitation. Administrative pressure may require 9.Pro-poor strategy developed by the government found to be effective in identifying hardcore poor 10. Continuous various Promotional activities have been created a favorable environment, which is helping to increase latrine coverage. Such as Campaign with dram bit, informal parabase children rally, meeting with imam, folk song (parabase), Para base meeting, competition etc.
1. Hygiene promotion and sanitation promotion should be started simultaneously 2. Strategy should be developed for behavioral change not for enhancing knowledge. 3. Social Marketing approach may be adopted 4. Strategy may be focused on changing one or two behaviors. 5. Strategy should be Cost effective
